LIMA dog training is an overarching philosophy that stands for “Least Invasive, Minimally Aversive.” It is supported by scientific research and focuses on training dogs in the least invasive and aversive way possible. This involves respecting the dog’s physical space, allowing them to make choices, and avoiding tactics that violate their emotional boundaries.
Aversive consequences, such as shock collars, are discouraged as they can have negative effects on the dog’s well-being and learning. LIMA uses a hierarchy of approaches to change a dog’s behavior, starting with addressing health and environmental factors, followed by positive reinforcement and gradually escalating to more aversive methods only if necessary.
